Adams Agricultural Fair Returns for 42nd Year

The Adams Agricultural Fair kicks off Friday night but you can stop by on Thursday to hear J.P. Murphy Band.

ADAMS, Mass. — The 42nd annual Adams Agricultural Fair kicks off this weekend, Aug. 5, 6 and 7, at Bowe Field.

The festivities begin a night early, on Thursday evening, with a performance by J.P. Murphy Band with Patrick Gray playing under the pavilion from 7 to 9:30. Admission is $5 to hear the popular Celtic band that plays all styles of music for all ages to enjoy.

The fair kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. with the Massachusetts Truck Pullers Association's open truck pull in the Demolition Derby area. Trucks can be entered at any time. The Pullers Association will also hold pulls on Saturday from 2 to 5 and 6 to 9.

Maple Grove Equipment will run the Children's Pedal tractor pull at the same time and the Bits and Pieces will round out the evening with music under the pavilion.

Judging begins Saturday at 10 a.m., and the Western Massachusetts Master Gardeners will be testing soil between 10 and 4. The horse pull begins at 11 and continues in the pit area with bleacher seating or bring your own chair.

The Aggie Fair Prince and Princess will be crowned at 11 a.m. at the pavilion.

Local cookbook author Jennifer Trainer Thompson speak about heritage breed chickens and cooking with eggs at 11:15 a.m. She also encourages anyone who makes hot sauce bring a sample for her to try. Her cookbooks will be available at the fair.

Pups in the Air, show with acrobatic dogs trained to catch Frisbees, starts at 11:30 and Bowie the Clown will be on hand at noon.  A demonstration on sheep shearing will follow and Terry A La Berry from 1 to 3. Storytime follows with crafts and storytelling by the Cheshire librarian.

At 7, the band Shyne will play and the truck pull continues.

Sunday is a big day with the ox pull beginning at 11 in the pit area. Competitions will go on all day.

Pups in the Air returns at 11:30 as well as the sheep shearing. Tom Riccardi brings his Birds of Prey program to the fair, beginning at noon. Riccardi will have several types of birds of prey that he has rehabilitated and will talk about them.

The big crash'em up Demolition Derby starts at 2 and drivers should bring their vehicles in by 10 for a safety inspection. Rules are posted at SkyFire Productions and the fair's websites.

Music by Rumor will be under the pavilion from 1 to 4.

Boy Scout Troop 38 will be on the field all weekend parking cars, having a campout and hosting a climbing wall. There is no cost to try the wall.

More than 40 vendors are expected with all types of crafts and such. Pony rides will be available through the 4-H Club.

Special features include Austrian haflingers from Sommer Hill Farm; Jerry Goodermote wood crafts; Bizzle Lizzie's Artistic Farm spinning and wood turning; and Northern Berkshire Beekeepers.

There will be lots to do and see all weekend: rides by Belanger Brothers Show, sheep, cattle, poultry, demonstrations, wood crafter, exhibits, antique tractors, food and much more.

Admission is $8 adults, $6 ages 6-18 and free for children 5 and younger. A three-day adult pass is $20. See the website for a full schedule and more information.
